More IT jobs, it seems, are being offered as contract positions. A friend was asking me about the pros and cons of contract vs. permanent IT positions, and I'd like to ask if anyone has any views to share? My take is that a contract position could be a good thing for those who seek project variety and flexibility.

Belle I would completely agree. As the economy picks up, contract work would give you a "temporary" reprieve and when the contract is over, it is likely (at least from where we stand right now) that the economic environment will be healthier and stronger, thus meaning more contract and permanent opportunities. Plus contract work is always a "free trial" for employers without the long-term committment as the recovery continues to pick up.

Contract positions are good both for the contractors and the employers because more employment opportunities are offered to the market. On the other hand, hiring new labours become less costly.

However, you also need to consider loyalty and morale.
